Video Counseling or E-Therapy:
Counseling or psychotherapy via a webcam is very similar to physical face to face counseling with both people together in an office. However, some benefits of video life counseling are flexibility of scheduling, comfort of your own space, ability to have sessions while traveling, privacy and confidentiality of not having to go to a busy office, and the personal, uninterrupted one-on-one individual attention that one experiences during an internet video session. Not all people or issues are suited for video life counseling so it is important to discuss expectations early in case a referral to in-person therapy is required.
Video life counseling requires commitment from both the therapist and the client. You would need to have uninterrupted access to a private space with a computer or a device with video capability, high-speed internet, and webcam for the hour of therapy to insure confidentiality. It is also recommended that you have 10-15 minutes before and after the session for your own personal reflection to “gather your thoughts” prior so that the hour you spend in therapy is entered into with focus and purpose and there is time afterwards to internally process your thoughts in solitude.
